The Crucial Role of Communication in a Relationship

Effective communication is a foundational building block of a healthy and prosperous relationship. Without consistent, positive, and effective communication, our relationships cannot thrive. While it may seem simple, speaking your mind (even as an adult) doesn’t always come naturally. Most of us forget how important honest communication is with the people that we care about.

Practicing open communication allows us to build trust, resolve conflict, connect emotionally, and strengthen respect. How we respond when we disagree on important topics, have a misunderstanding, or feel upset with our partner can be the difference between a productive conversation and an emotionally heated argument.

The Importance of Communication

1. It Builds Trust

Sharing your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with your partner shows that you trust them. Allowing your partner the opportunity to support you when you are struggling or show up for you as a better partner builds trust within the relationship over time. Your partner will likely feel safe and encouraged to open themselves, creating an even deeper connection.

2. It Strengthens Your Bond

Effective communication can help you to feel secure and comfortable in your relationship. Nurturing your love through communication, support, and honesty can encourage your love to grow even further. Successful relationships require effort, and in many cases that effort looks like strong communication.

3. It Deepens Your Connection

When you share and open up to your partner, they learn new things about you that can allow them to be a better partner to you and deepen your mutual connection. As humans we are ever changing, and so are our needs, desires, and goals within and outside of a relationship. Continued happiness and connection in your relationship depends on consistent communication.

4. It Helps Avoid Misunderstanding

When we practice open communication, we are less likely to left things unsaid that are important to us. Sometimes, our partner can’t know that we’re upset or frustrated with them unless we say it. The more you communicate, the more open communication will feel like the standard within your relationship and prevent misunderstanding and miscommunication.

5. It Allows for Support

Our intimate relationships can be the source of our greatest comfort in life. Sharing your emotions with your partner provides them with the opportunity to show up for you and support you in the way that you need.

 Our Communication Tips

At the Jessica Yaffa Coaching Institute, many of our coaches serve as a relationship communication coach to the couples and individuals that they work with. If you’re looking for advice on how to improve your relationships with loved ones, consider a few of the communications techniques below and visit our workshop page for information on our relationship communication workshop.

1. Set Aside Time to Speak Face-to-Face

In a time where most of us can have conversations just as easily via text, facetime, or phone call, face-to-face communication should remain your top priority. Whether it be your significant other, friends, or family, it’s important to show your loved ones that they are indispensable. Body language, eye-contact, and tone of voice can be lost when having important conversations over the phone.

2. Be Aware of Your Body Language

Translating our emotions to a loved one can be challenging. Most of the time, your body language can be a better indicator of your true feelings. Sharing your feelings honestly and being mindful of your body language can set you up for a more successful conversation.

3. Determine Your Own Value and What You Want

Understanding your own needs and values can set the foundation for a successful relationship. Before you can effectively communicate with others, you need to be able to have an honest conversation with yourself. What do you want from a relationship? What needs or values are the most important to you? Once you pinpoint your priorities in a relationship, it becomes easier to communicate them.

4. Stay Open and Honest

Communicating in an open and honest way in your relationship can be challenging. Both parties in a relationship need to feel comfortable sharing their emotions without judgement. Be gentle with one another and remain open to hearing and understanding a different perspective than your own.

5. Assess Your Own Communication Style

Everyone has their own way of expressing emotions. Misunderstandings arise when we don’t understand how our partner communicates or even how we communicate. Asking yourself how you best process information and emotions can help you figure out your communication style and share it with your partner to improve communication in relationship. Understanding that communication is a two-way street is vital to healthy relationships. Working with a relationship communication coach can help you to understand your and your partner’s communication styles.
