We know that making the decision to end a relationship can be challenging. You might be feeling conflicted, wondering if it’s the right decision or if you should keep trying. Taking the time to think about your relationship goals and priorities and making sure not to jump to a decision can help you feel more comfortable in the long run. While it’s likely to be difficult, there are ways to go about breaking up with a partner that show respect and appreciation and can lessen the pain and discomfort you’ll both experience.

Our Advice

  • Don’t rush into it: Take time to consider how you want the conversation to unfold and prepare in advance while making sure not to put it off for too long.
  • Consider your partners feelings: Imagining how your partner might react, and how you would react in their position can help you approach the situation feeling prepared and empathetic.
  • Be honest: Communicating with your partner why you want to break up and what brought you to the decision is important. Be honest but try not to be harsh or mean.
  • Talk it out: Confiding in a friend or loved one who you can trust can help you feel prepared for the conversation. Make sure that the person you talk with won’t share the information with others or your partner.
  • Have a conversation in person: While it might seem easier to break up with someone over the phone or via text, think about your partners feelings and how you would feel if roles were reversed.
