Ghosted in a Relationship? How to Cope and Move Forward
Whether you’re newly single or have had your share of dates, putting yourself out there can be intimidating, especially with the rise of dating trends like ghosting. Ghosting is a form of rejection categorized by an abrupt cutoff of communication. One moment your relationship is progressing, and the next your calls, texts, and DMs are going unanswered. Ghosting can leave you feeling lost and confused, wondering what you might have done wrong. We understand how challenging it can be to move on when a relationship comes to an end in such sudden way. At the Jessica Yaffa Coaching Institute, we’re here to provide you with guidance and support to move forward in a healthy and productive way.
What is Ghosting?
Ghosting has become increasingly common in today’s dating culture. When your relationship, whether it be a friendship or intimate partnership, ends without explanation or conversation, you could say that you’ve been “ghosted.” Ghosting is a way of withdrawing from a relationship passively and without confronting the situation. When someone ghosts you, it can be difficult to figure out how to respond. With lingering questions and a lack of closure, moving on from ghosting can be a challenge.
Why do People Ghost?
If you’ve been ghosted in a relationship, you’ve probably asked yourself “why did this happen to me?” People ghost for a variety of reasons, the most likely being that they believe it to be easier than confronting the situation by having an open and honest conversation. While we know that depriving someone of closure and the opportunity to share their feelings is wrong, it’s likely the ghoster thinks that avoiding such an uncomfortable conversation will spare your feelings and cause less hurt. Relationship experts agree that ghosting is a passive way to withdraw from a relationship and often comes from a place of personal insecurity and fear.
How to Cope with Ghosting
As with the ending of any relationship, it can take time to move on and feel healed. This is especially true when you’re lacking closure and answers after being ghosted in a relationship. We’re here for you as your work cope with ghosting and are excited to share our relationship coach’s thoughts on how to move forward.
-
Practice Self Compassion
- It is so important to give yourself grace after being ghosted in a relationship. Regardless of the situation, your feelings are valid, and it can be hugely beneficial to work to acknowledge and accept those feelings. Talking to someone about how you’re feeling can also help you to identify, process, and accept all your emotions.
- Feeling ashamed or like the situation is your fault is common after ghosting. We want to emphasize that ghosting is not a reflection of your worth, but a reflection of the ghoster’s inability to communicate. Reminding yourself that you deserve an open and honest relationship and that you are not to blame can be helpful when moving forward.
-
Practice Self Care
- Following any breakup or relationship ending, practicing self-care can help you to reconnect with yourself and find some peace. Find joy in connecting with friends, getting outside, finding a new hobby, or practicing mindfulness!
-
Look Forward, Not Back
- It’s easy to ruminate on the past, especially after being ghosted in a relationship, but we encourage you to think of all the amazing things on the horizon. Spend some time reflecting on what you’re looking for in a relationship and don’t lose sight of them.
- Seeking closure from someone who ghosted you can prolong your pain as it’s unlikely that the ghoster will reply. We know it’s challenging, but the best thing that you can do is to work on moving forward instead of looking back.
-
Find Support Around Your
- Lean on your friends and family to support you. Talking about how you feel can make it easier to cope with the emotions, especially with a professional. There is no shame in seeking support from a relationship coach for couples or individuals or a therapist to help you heal and move forward in a healthy way. We’re here for you if you need someone to talk to!
