We know that while joyous and fulfilling, the holidays can also bring feelings of overwhelm and stress for many. You’re not alone if the prospect of extended time with family and friends, the expectation of holiday cheer, or financial concerns have you dreading the coming months. Taking time to practice self-care this holiday season can help to alleviate stress and allow you to embrace and enjoy the upcoming festivities.

Our Self-Care Tips

  1. Set realistic expectations

Comparison truly can be the thief of joy during the holiday season. With the pressures and expectations set by perfect holiday portrayals on social media, it can be challenging to manage expectations. Taking a conscious break from social media and limiting screen time can help you refrain from comparing yourself to others and allow more time for authentic connection.

  1. Prioritize movement and meditation

Carving out time in your busy schedule for movement or meditation can be a great stress reliever. Physical activity can increase blood flow and help you to feel more grounded and connected to your environment, especially if you chose an outdoor activity! Meditation is also an excellent way to ground into the present moment and take time for yourself. You can find many guided meditations on YouTube or various apps like Calm and Headspace if you’re new to meditating.

  1. Recognize your grief

The holidays can be especially challenging for those that are grieving a loved one. Whether you feel angry and sad or can find joy during this season, your grief and feelings are valid. Recognizing that grief is a journey and there’s no right or wrong way to grieve can help alleviate the holiday related stressors connected to grief.

  1. Set boundaries with friends and family

At the Jessica Yaffa Coaching Institute, we are big on boundaries all year round. Setting boundaries in advance of holiday plans and time with friends and family can be particularly helpful in helping you to understand your limits and embrace what you do want to participate in.

  1. Take care of your physical being

Getting enough sleep, hydrating, and fueling your body is important every day, especially when you’re experiencing elevated stress levels. Working to stick to a sleep schedule and reminding yourself to drink water and eat is a top form of self-care during the holidays.

  1. Create a holiday budget

Financial stress can be significant during the holidays with the expectation of decorating, gift giving, party throwing, and more. Setting a holiday budget and sticking to it can help to alleviate financial stress and set yourself up for success.
